Transform your bathroom into a tranquil coastal retreat

There’s no written rule that says you need a beach side holiday home in order to create a coastal bathroom retreat!

There’s no written rule that says you need a beachside holiday home in order to create a coastal bathroom retreat!

When planning your beach-inspired bathroom, ask yourself what it is that really draws you to the ocean and what truly inspires you. Is it the salty air and the textured sand beneath your toes? Is it the amazing blue hues and the shimmering water on a bright sunny day? Or is it the aged driftwood and the peacefulness of the waves lapping the shore? Identify the key elements and use them as inspiration to transform your tired bathroom.

Colour and texture
With a seemingly unlimited choice of tiles on the market, select a theme for your coastal bathroom and work around it. For a contemporary look, consider sleek, pale grey finishes with polished chrome tapware and touches of white for a soothing spa-like feel. Or for a more tropical-inspired bathroom, opt for natural finishes such as pebbled tiles with sand-inspired hues, a natural stone basin, and a recycled timber vanity recalling a bygone beach style. To create a bold statement in your bathroom, use some reflective blue mosaic tiles to mirror the sparkling water on a gorgeous summer’s day.

Lighting
A coastal bathroom truly reminiscent of the outdoors must be light and airy. Utilise large windows and well-positioned mirrors to reflect natural light around the room, and complement this with artificial lighting suitable for night-time use. To really open up the space and allow the sunlight to stream in, incorporate a skylight into your design.

Fixtures and fittings
What is a coastal bathroom retreat without a touch of luxury? Focus on the tranquil element of water by incorporating indulgent pieces such as a freestanding bath and luxurious rain shower to wash away your cares at the end of a hard day.

Artwork
Next time you’re at your favourite beach, take a few photos of the distant horizon and also close-ups of driftwood, sand and seashells. Have your favourite images printed on canvas in varying sizes and hues, and either hang on a blank wall or layer across a shelf.

Décor
A round, natural-edged mirror, decorative seashells and other natural materials, and plush towels in warm natural tones will help soften hard surfaces and complete the look of your beach-inspired bathroom. Use inexpensive woven baskets to store spare towels and toiletries, and add subtle touches of greenery for a feeling of tranquility. Complete your coastal look with a timber bath stool and some scented candles.
